Description
N. Mendal Shafer’s hand-colored engraving captures Lafayette’s celebrated arrival in New York, staged on a columned balcony draped in an American flag as mounted officers, marching infantry, and drummers fill the street below in full period regalia. The scene is signed and dated in pencil at the lower right, with a titled inscription beneath the image reading “Lafayette in Newark” (Newark-Union Line 1824). Presented in a substantial carved giltwood frame with an olive suede mat and rust-toned inner border, the piece shows the warm, slightly muted palette typical of period hand-coloring, with the mat and glazing both presenting cleanly. A handsome piece of American historical printmaking, well suited to a library or entry hall wall with room to command attention.
